🌀ACTION ALERT: OPPOSE SB 1718 IMMIGRATION - BEFORE WEDNESDAY

Members & Friends,

DeSantis’ legislative puppets are hearing his cruel anti-immigration proposal on Wednesday in the Senate, and we need you to OPPOSE it. SB 1718 Immigration is fast-tracked to be heard in the Rules Committee and it will be followed by only one more committee before it heads to the Senate floor. The bill does the following:

• Enhances fines and penalties on Florida businesses that hire illegal immigrants up to $10,000 per worker and will revoke their licenses;

• Authorizes Florida law enforcement to conduct random audits of businesses for compliance with the law;

• Enhances criminal penalties for those “smuggling” (i.e., concealing, harboring, or shielding illegal immigrants);

• Invalidates out of state drivers' licenses of illegal immigrants in Florida, issues citations for driving with invalid licenses, and maintains a list that is reported to the state;

• Prohibits local government creation of identification cards ;

• Authorizes Sheriffs in county jails to take DNA samples when an illegal immigrant is arrested and an ICE detainer is issued;

• Mandates that hospitals receiving state Medicaid dollars start tracking and regularly reporting the numbers and costs of care of illegal immigrants to the state;

• Bans illegal immigrants from getting a Florida law license after November 2026.

This bill only promotes more racism and xenophobia in Florida. It will increase racial profiling and unfairly target persons of color regardless of their immigration status.
