🌀ACTION ALERT: OPPOSE HB 837/SB 236 Civil Remedies TODAY

Members & Friends,

The companion bills HB 837/SB 236 Civil Remedies are moving quickly to floor votes in the House and Senate, and we need you to contact your own individual State Representatives and Senators to OPPOSE them. They are just another example of how DeSantis and his Republican puppets rob the “little guy” to pay off rich corporate donors. And, of course, all of this legislative thievery goes on behind the scenes of media attention while we spend the majority of our time trying to protect fragile democratic norms and guardrails that are under siege in other bills. This legislation makes it more difficult for victims to sue negligent businesses, specifically by:

  • Limiting one-way attorney fees that negligent corporations must pay, essentially forcing the cash-strapped victim to pay for unaffordable legal fees while the corporate plaintiff defends itself with a team of highly paid lawyers;

  • Capping the amount negligent businesses pay out in damages;

  • Changing third-party rights to sue a negligent business for “bad faith;”

  • Enforcing “comparative negligence” so a party greater than 50% at fault cannot recover damages;

  • Limiting what a civil jury could hear about a victim’s medical costs;

  • Shortening the statute of limitations for a victim to file a claim.

We all know that justice delayed is justice denied. The intent of these bills is to allow negligent rich corporations greater ability to delay and deny claims before finally paying out lowball awards. Meanwhile, the freedom of everyday citizens in “free Florida” to seek justice is denied. Please contact TODAY your own State Representative for HB 837 and your own State Senator for SB 236 and urge them to VOTE NO on Civil Remedies. You may not change their minds, but you will ensure they know there is opposition. Finally, please ensure that you communicate this message to your clubs and educate other members in the community. The solution lies in our votes next year. Thank you,
